The self-referential musical parodying the form is hardly an original creation. Recent iterations run the spectrum from "Urinetown" to "Spamalot" to"[title of show]." But none of these can match"Musical the Musical!" for lacerating the traditional boy-meets-girl story with breathtaking vulgarity. If you blanch at rough-edged references to sex, drugs and the odd fascist joke, you probably ought to stay away. But if you like your musical comedy served up with an acidy bite, you'll be willing to overlook the whoops-we're-out-of-time ending for this crass, knowing tuner that mocks everything from "Chicago" to "La Cage aux Folles."
